Radon Services in Dartmoor and Devon
Dr Paul Jarvis, Director of Jarvis Nuclear, brings over two decades of first-hand experience in Health Physics, Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety to every project across Dartmoor. He has worked on licensed nuclear sites, within the defence sector, in nuclear power, and as a consultant for organisations both large and small throughout the UK and abroad.
Since 2017, Jarvis Nuclear has delivered Radon and RPA Services throughout Dartmoor, Devon, Somerset, and Cornwall. We provide practical, tailored support in Radiation Protection, Radon and Nuclear Safety, alongside RPS Training Courses designed for homeowners, buyers, and educational settings near the moor. These courses cover monitoring Radon, reporting findings correctly, and reducing exposure risks for households and workplaces alike.

Understanding Radon on Dartmoor
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas with no colour or smell, formed as uranium breaks down in soil and granite. Dartmoor’s granite geology means Radon can occur at higher levels than in many other parts of Devon, making testing especially worthwhile for homes and businesses on or near the moor. The World Health Organization names Radon as the second leading cause of lung cancer, after smoking.
A Radon Affected Area is any location with more than a 1% chance that a property exceeds the recommended Action Level. Levels are measured in becquerels per cubic metre (Bq/m³). Our Long-Term and Short-Term Radon Detector Kits, together with expert Radiological Protection guidance, help Dartmoor residents and employers understand and manage their risk with confidence. All results are carefully analysed by a UK-accredited laboratory

Radiation Protection Advisor Dartmoor FAQs
Why is Radon a particular concern on Dartmoor?
Dartmoor sits on granite bedrock, which naturally contains higher concentrations of uranium than many other rock types. This means Radon gas can build up in homes and workplaces on or near the moor more readily than elsewhere in Devon, making testing especially worthwhile.
Do I need a Radon survey if I'm selling a property on Dartmoor?
Yes, if your property sits within a Radon Affected Area, prospective buyers and their solicitors will typically request evidence of a recent Radon survey before proceeding with a sale.
Who needs to appoint a Radiation Protection Advisor?
Employers who carry out work involving Ionising Radiation must appoint a qualified RPA. Schedule four of the Ionising Radiations Regulations sets out the specific circumstances that require RPA consultation.
How long does a Radon test take?
Our Long-Term Detector Kit runs for 90 days and gives the most reliable picture for risk assessment purposes. Our Short-Term Kit gives a quicker 10-day indication, though it isn’t suitable for remediation decisions.
Do you provide RPS training for farms and rural businesses?
Yes, we deliver bespoke Radiation Protection Supervisor and Radiation Awareness training for a wide range of sectors across Dartmoor, including agricultural, veterinary, and educational settings.
What areas of Dartmoor do you cover?
We cover the whole Dartmoor National Park, including Tavistock, Okehampton, Princetown, Ashburton, Moretonhampstead and all surrounding villages, from PL16 to PL20, EX20, and TQ13.
What happens if my Radon results are high?
If your results exceed the recommended Action Level, we’ll talk you through practical, cost-effective remediation options and can advise on the most suitable approach for your property.
