What is Radon, & Where Does It Come From?
Radon is a colourless, odourless, radioactive gas, produced during the radioactive decay of Uranium found in soil and rocks. It cannot be tasted, but it can be detected in water at times. Radon exists at varying concentrations in both workplaces and homes, and as stated by the World Health Organisation, it is the second leading cause of lung cancer.
All buildings have some amount of Radon; however, higher concentrations are frequently found when windows are closed, and heating is on. An area is categorised as a Radon Affected Area if there is greater than a 1% probability of Radon levels surpassing the Action Level. The concentration levels are measured in becquerels per cubic metre (Bq/m³), where a becquerel is a unit of radioactivity representing the number of decays per second.
