What is Radon and Where Does it Originate From?
Radon is a naturally occurring, colourless, odourless, radioactive gas formed by the decay of Uranium in soil and rocks. While undetectable by taste, it can sometimes be found in water. Present in varying concentrations in homes and workplaces, the World Health Organisation identifies it as the second leading cause of lung cancer.
All buildings contain some level of radon; however, higher concentrations are often found when windows are closed, and heating is on. An area is designated a Radon Affected Area if there’s over a 1% probability of a property exceeding the Action Level. Radon concentration is measured in becquerels per cubic metre (Bq/m³), with a becquerel representing the number of radioactive decays per second.
