What is Radon & What Is The Source?
Radon is an invisible, scentless radioactive gas occurring naturally through the radioactive disintegration of Uranium – within soil and rocks. This tasteless gas can also be identified in water supplies. It is present in differing amounts within both residential and commercial buildings, and the W.H.O. identifies it as the second most significant contributor to lung cancer.
All buildings contain some Radon; however, higher concentrations are observed when ventilation is limited due to closed windows and heating systems. An area is a ‘Radon Affected Area’ if it has more than 1% likelihood of a property surpassing the designated Action Level. Radon is quantified in becquerels per cubic metre (Bq/m³). The becquerel is the standard unit of radioactivity, representing the no. of decays per second.
