When identifying Radon in homes, there is a recommendation from the UK Health Security Agency to reduce Radon levels in situations where the average annual concentration is greater than 200 Bq/ m3. Is Your Home Affected by Radon in Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, or Dorset?
The likelihood of your home being affected by Radon, can be found by viewing the interactive UK Radon map. Simply type in your postcode, and search. If your property is in a Radon affected area, it will show up on the Radon map as a shade of brown (the darker the shade, the greater the likelihood of a property being affected by Radon.) Having said that, the only real way of finding out if a property is affected, is to measure the concentration.
For detection of Radon in homes, measurement from 2x Radon detectors is usually sufficient – one measuring the Radon concentration on the ground floor, and one measuring on the 1st floor. To ensure an appropriate average is measured, a measurement period of three months is recommended. This allows an average to be calculated, and for a seasonal correction factor to be applied. Measurements can be carried out over a shorter period (eg. 7- or 10-day measurements) where an indication of Radon concentration is required.
How Can Jarvis Nuclear Help Identify Radon in Homes?
Radon levels in a building, vary over time, and are very much dependent on ventilation and heating. Eg. higher levels are normally experienced when windows are closed, and heating is on. Every building has Radon, and in many areas the levels are low. Areas where there is greater than 1% probability of a property exceeding the Action Level are referred to as Radon Affected Areas.
At Jarvis Nuclear, we are able to provide passive Radon detectors for measurement of Radon concentration. These are placed in your home for the duration of the measurement period, before being returned for analysis using a UK accredited laboratory. A report is then produced, detailing the results of the measurements and advice on whether or not any remediation work is required. If necessary, we can provide you with a list of organisations who offer this service. Following any remediation work, we can also provide Radon detectors to assess the impact of the work.
